Within the framework of the joint initiative between the European Union and the Council of Europe under the Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey entitled “Strengthening the Human Rights Ombudsman to fight discrimination”, a study visit of representatives of the Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina headed by Ombudspersons Jasminkom Džumhur, PhD, and Ljubiniko Mitrović, PhD, to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg took place from 11 - 13 July.

The aim of the visit is to get a deeper insight of the staff of the Ombudman on the functioning of monitoring mechanisms under several Council of Europe conventions in the area of human rights protection and therefore a series of meetings with representatives of different CoE structures, including the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, the Secretariat of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT), the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), the Department of the Execution of the ECtHR’s judgments, etc. The visitors also attended a Grand Chamber hearing in the case of Zubac v. Croatia (no. 40160/12).

As a result, the representatives of the Human Rights Ombudsperson of Bosnia and Herzegovina are familiarised with the structure, values and the vigorous monitoring mechanisms of the Council of Europe in promoting human rights.
