Press statement | 01.12.2016 Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina condemn attacs on journalists Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina Human Rights Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina are hereby turning the attention of the general the public to some improper and inappropriate actions towards the journalists and all other media workers that took place recently in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in the Republic of Srpska and condemn all such attacks and actions. Ombudsmen use this opportunity to highlight that degree of development of a society including ours, can certainly be measured by the way how the journalists and media workers are treated by other public life actors. Through their work, the journalists bring to the public attention all the phenomena both positive and negative which are present in a given society giving their critical and analytical views on these phenomena. In this way, they create an atmosphere in which these phenomena are discussed, and different views presented, thus contributing to a democratic atmosphere, rule of law and promotion and protection of human rights. Such an atmosphere enhances social development. A society in which journalists are in any way prevented from doing so, is experiencing a degree of restriction of freedom of expression, and also all other human rights and freedoms. Ombudsmen of BiH use this opportunity to call on all the participants of public life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in particular all public officials to restrict their actions to those not limiting the rights of journalists in any way, and to be proactive in this area. Ombudsmen also invite the relevant authorities, primarily the police and the prosecution to promptly and efficiently work on solving and prosecution of perpetrators of all acts directed against journalists and media workers in order to avoid creating the impression that crimes committed against them can go unpunished.
