Ombudswoman Jasminka Džumhur on meeting of ENNHRI Advisory Group

Ombudsman Jasminka Džumhur the meeting Advisory Group ENNHRIOmbudsman Jasminka Džumhur the meeting Advisory Group ENNHRI

In the framework of the project of the European network of independent human rights institutions (ENNHRI) on the human rights of older persons, Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina, mr.sci. Jasminka Džumhur participates in a meeting of the Advisory Group, taking place on 27 and 28 September this year in Brussels, and the celebration of the International Day of the Elderly in the European Parliament.

The Advisory Group is organized with the aim of considering a draft report on the human rights of elderly persons placed in institutions, which is prepared on the basis of the monitoring performed by the national human rights institutions in the six pilot countries: Croatia, Lithuania, Romania, Germany, Hungary and Belgium. This report contains recommendations for improving the human rights situation of the elderly in institutions, as well as a tool for advocating the establishment of standards for institutional care for the elderly.

ENNHRI and AGE Platform Europe on 28 October organize discussion at the European Parliament on the need for the adoption of the new UN Convention, which will be dedicated to the rights of the elderly, as the International Convention on Human Rights does not regulate the specific question of age discrimination or are not related to the elderly. Regional human rights mechanisms do not protect the rights of older people generally and systemically. In 2010, the UN General Assembly established a working group to identify possible shortcomings in the existing international human rights framework to protect the rights of older persons, including exploring possibilities for a new international convention on the rights of older persons. Political support for the new Convention is growing, although the EU continues to oppose it, which is why ENHR and AGE Platform Europe decided to celebrate the International Day of Human Rights by organizing discussions on this subject in the European Parliament. This event will open the dialogue in the EU and provide an update on recent developments relating to work of the UN Working Group and its impact on European countries and the situation of the elderly in Europe.
