Press statement | 15.09.2016 Visits for removal of architectural barriers Architectural barriers Staff of the Ombudsman Department for the protection of the rights of persons with disability is carrying out the fact finding visits in order to establish the architectural accessibility of the buildings to persons with disabilities in co-operation with representatives of the Association of Persons with Paraplegia, during the month of September 2016. The visits will include buildings of Bosnia and Herzegovina Parliament, In addition to entity and cantonal assemblies buildings and the premises of the Assembly of Brcko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This will be also the opportunity for discussion with competent function holders about the accessibility issues in order to establish to which degree the premises of the above mentioned authorities are adjusted for persons with disabilities. To remind, the Institution of Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina has prepared a special report on “Accessibility of business premises of the legislative bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina to persons with disabilities“ in an attempt to support the legislative bodies in their efforts to govern this issue and implement the general principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and take activities toward the executive authorities and other public bodies in order to provide appropriate interpretation of positive legislation in the best interest of persons with disabilities. Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in accordance with its responsibilities and mandate, will keep taking measures relating to the monitoring of the application of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, particularly bearing in mind that any delay in solving the problem of accessibility makes it difficult to promote the rights and the realization of the principle of equality, non-discrimination and equality of persons with disabilities.
