Press statement | 24.05.2016 The Ombudsmen condemn attack on journalists Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina considered unacceptable and strongly condemn all the more frequent both verbal and physical attacks on journalists and calls on the authorities to take all measures in order to investigate all the actions that have the effect of endangering the safety of journalists and limiting press freedoms. The Ombudsmen notice that there are need significantly more effective measures to prevent these unwanted effects, which are contrary to the national legislation, and international standards that guarantee the safety of journalists and media freedoms. Insufficient information for citizens about the role of journalists in society as carrier of public speech, but also enhanced (non) accountability of public officials at all levels, lead to the creation of an atmosphere in which journalists are not safe in their work, resulting in a violation of media freedoms and the rights of citizens to be timely informed, and ultimately constitutes a violation of human rights and hinders the development of democracy.
